What Time is It? BERKELEY TIME!
By Michael Pihulic

The puzzle consists of a panorama taken of UC Berkeley's Memorial Glade. Conspicuously visible within the panorama are characters from the cartoon Adventure Time that have been photoshopped into the panorama with various degrees of skill. In total there are 17 characters. The title of the puzzle itself is a reference to a catch phrase from the Adventure Time cartoon.

List of conspicuous characters as they appear from left to right:

  1. Science Cat (On the Balcony)
  2. Engagement Ring Princess (Between a couple)
  3. Abracadaniel (Near a tree behind someone reading a book)
  4. Rainy (Next to a gentleman sitting on the grass)
  5. Choose Goose (Next to a gentleman looking at his phone)
  6. Hot Dog Princess (Near a cluster of people, and next to a lady who was accidentally duplicated in two shots of the panorama)
  7. Finn (Near the stairs that are visible to the left of the Campanile)
  8. Old Lady Princess (hiding behind a railing to the right of the Campanile)
  9. Raggedy Princess (On the second level of Doe Library peering over railing)
  10. Muscle Princess (On the sidewalk in front of Doe Library)
  11. Ogre (Towering over Doe Library)
  12. Lumpy Space Princess (Totally having a fun time on the steps of Doe Library)
  13. Lady Rainicorn (Flying high up in the sky above Doe Library)
  14. Ugly Monster (In front of the Free Speech Movement Cafe)
  15. Skeleton Princess (Walking next to a lady on the path near the reflecting pond)
  16. Keeoth (Hanging out on the roof of CV Starr East Asian Library)
  17. Susan Strong (Hanging out between two guys trying to play catch)

If you take the first letter of each characters name you get the clue phrase "SEARCH FOR MOLLUSKS," which is a reference to the Snail character who is hidden in a single scene in every episode of the cartoon. Throughout the panorama there are 49 copies of the same Snail image hidden, either partially obscured or faded into the background. The very first snail appears in the top upper left hand corner of the image. Next to each snail is a letter that is also partially faded or hidden. The snails are only partially hidden, so it was expected that a solver might skip the first step completely and begin finding all of the snails instead of identifying the characters.

Reading the letters found next to the snails as they appear from left to right yields the very long clue phrase "LAST PART OF NAME OF THE CHARACTER IM WITH IN HOT TO THE TOUCH." The clue phrase refers to a specific episode of Adventure Time "Hot To The Touch." In that episode the snail appears in exactly one scene with the character NEPTR, whose arm can be seen reaching into a box for spare parts. The Snail is next to the box. NEPTR's name is an abbreviation for NEVER ENDING PIE THROWING ROBOT. The last part of his name is the answer, ROBOT.
