This puzzle is derived from the popular game 2048, with some key difference. Each cell that spawns in the highest level 4x4 grid reveals itself to be a 3x3 grid, and similarly each cell in the 3x3 grid spawns a 2x2 grid. Each starting cell in every 2x2 grid is populated with either a 0, 1, or 2. This might suggest ternary numbers, which is confirmed by the title 2210212, which is the base-3 representation of the number 2048.
Observing the initial states of the nested grids soon reveals a pattern.
For a given square in the 4x4 grid, each cell of the resulting 3x3 grid always spawns the same 2x2 grid [ with the top-left cell always containing a 0 ]. The initial state of that 2x2 grid can be read off as a ternary number between 1 and 26 and thereby mapped to a letter. The letters thus formed by the 8 border squares in the 3x3 grid, when read clockwise from top-left, form an 8 letter word. Similarly in the same manner each of the 12 border squares in the 4x4 grid spells a different 8 letter word which can be read off clockwise from top-left to yield the phrase:
